Once Thanksgiving arrives, you probably won't have much time for home improvement projects. Here are some you should complete now before the holidays.

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, now is an excellent time to start getting your home ready for the holidays. Whether you are having company or want to be thankful for a clean, restive home, here are a few home repair and improvement projects our real estate agents recommend doing before Thanksgiving.

  1. Update your light fixtures.
    With the sun setting so much earlier now, we're depending on the lights more and more. Unless you traditionally plan your Thanksgiving meal in the middle of the day, it'll be painfully obvious to your guests if your interior lighting is outdated and insufficient. Now is a great time to look into what you can do to shed a little more light on the subject. Look for bright, modern light fixtures, add dimmers for mood lighting, and consider a combination of ambient light and task lighting.

  2. Service your HVAC system.
    Fall is a great time to have your furnace serviced. With the weather getting colder but not yet at its coldest, this is a good time to have your system checked out and to find any developing issues that need attention. Also, don't forget to change your furnace filter, especially if you're having guests over who have allergies or sinus issues. To minimize allergens and debris, and to keep your heat blowing freely, your furnace filter should be replaced about once a month.

  3. Upgrade your kitchen appliances.
    If you've been thinking of updating your important kitchen appliances, now is the time to do it! Cooking a full Thanksgiving meal using old appliances isn't fun. Even if you'd been considering updating your appliances as a Christmas present to yourself, spring for them a little early, and put them right to work feeding family and friends for the holidays. Plus, all new appliances will be a selling point when you're ready to add your house to the list of South Bend homes for sale.

  4. Prep the fireplace.
    Do you enjoy having a crackling fire in the fireplace when cold weather hits? Now is a great time to have your fireplace and chimney cleaned and prepped for the season. It's getting colder, and your guests will appreciate the ambiance of a fire come the holidays, but there's not yet a lot of ice and snow that could make cleaning the chimney treacherous. This is a good task to hire out and let an experienced professional handle. One less task on your plate!

  5. Clean the house.
    We all have that instinct to clean the house before we have company over, but don't let yourself succumb to the inclination to wait until the last few days before. You'll want to do a fairly thorough cleaning and decluttering, which takes more than just a couple of days. Start by decluttering because once that's done, it'll be much easier to go through and clean everything thoroughly. With the major cleaning done in advance, you can do a quick clean one last time the day before your guests arrive.

  6. Holiday decor.
